Most video games instruct players through repetition. When a mechanic is presented, players understand how it works and subsequently establish habits based on it.
For example, if a platform has been steady 10 times in a row, players will naturally expect it to remain stable the eleventh time. If spikes are always visible before becoming deadly, players will begin to rely on visual cues. These assumptions allow players to efficiently navigate game worlds.
This learning process is commonly used by game designers to generate a sense of fairness. Mastering the rules helps players understand them and improves their talents.
Level Devil purposefully interrupts this process.
The game continuously challenges previously taught behavior rather than encouraging it. The outcome is a gameplay experience in which assumptions become liabilities rather than assets.
